Technical strategy, solution architecture, and platform direction
Talamas rebuilt its production equipment website on the latest version of Drupal, lifting website performance by 134%, modernizing the responsive experience across desktop, tablet, and mobile, and separating rental and sales inquiries into distinct, streamlined workflows.
About the project
The Client
Talamas is based in Waltham, Massachusetts, and has provided state-of-the-art production technology and expertise to professionals in the film, television, and digital content industries since 1979. Its rental and sales divisions cover video, audio, communications, and digital cinema equipment across New England.
The Situation
Talamas ran on an older version of Drupal that was no longer supported, exposing the business to growing security, maintenance, and performance risks. The site treated rental and online sales as separate product categories, but every customer inquiry funneled through a single combined form. That made it hard for the internal team to route, prioritize, and respond to requests efficiently across two different business lines. Website performance sat around 35%, and the design no longer held up on tablet and mobile devices, where a growing portion of the audience browsed.
The Challenge
Talamas faced several challenges:
- Legacy platform limitations that blocked modern capabilities and ongoing support
- Growing security and maintainability risks from unsupported core and modules
- A single combined form for rental and sales that slowed internal request handling
- Weak responsive behavior that hurt usability across tablets and mobile devices
- Slow website performance affecting user experience and search visibility
The Solution
BinaryWorks rebuilt the Talamas site on Drupal, preserving every existing feature while refreshing the experience, workflows, and platform foundation.
Complete platform migration: Content, users, taxonomy, and existing functionality were moved onto Drupal through a structured migration and upgrade approach, protecting every feature the Talamas team relied on.
Modern responsive redesign: New layouts, refreshed navigation, and a product-focused user experience were built with a mobile-first mindset, giving customers a consistent experience whether they browse on desktop, tablet, or phone.
Separate rental and sales workflows: The old combined form was replaced with distinct rental and online sales inquiry forms, giving each business division a dedicated submission and routing path that reduces internal handling time.
Core and module updates: Drupal core and contributed modules were updated across the platform, closing known vulnerabilities and lowering the ongoing maintenance burden.
Performance optimization: Frontend, backend, and hosting-level tuning lifted the website performance score from 35% to 82%, an uplift of 134%.
Cloud hosting on Amazon Web Services: The site was deployed on a scalable cloud architecture on Amazon Web Services, giving Talamas the reliability, performance headroom, and security foundation it needed for growth.
Ongoing maintenance and support: Routine updates, security patches, and platform monitoring keep the site stable and continuously improving.
The Results
"The team delivers high-quality work with exceptional responsiveness and communication. They consistently meet deadlines, provide creative and practical solutions, and demonstrate a strong commitment to the success of our project."
- David Talamas, Founder and President
Faster website performance: Website performance improved by 134%, moving from 35% to 82% and delivering both faster page loads and stronger search visibility.
A modern, supported platform: Talamas moved off an unsupported legacy platform onto Drupal, reducing security and maintenance risk.
Streamlined inquiry handling: Distinct rental and online sales inquiry forms replaced the single combined process, speeding up internal request handling for both business divisions.
Consistent multi-device experience: Redesigned layouts now support desktop, tablet, and mobile users with consistent usability, matching how customers browse for production equipment.
Easier product management: The refreshed backend simplifies rental and sale product management for the internal team, giving them more control over listings without developer involvement.
Stronger security posture: Updated core and modules reduced known vulnerabilities and lowered ongoing maintenance concerns.
A future-ready foundation: The rebuilt platform on Amazon Web Services gives Talamas a stable base for future upgrades and platform enhancements without another disruptive rebuild.
Why Drupal was chosen
Drupal was selected for its scalability, security, long-term support, and strength as a flexible content management platform for organizations with distinct product lines and structured catalogs. Its support for custom workflows, structured content models, and clean separation between different business divisions made it the right fit for a company that manages both a rental and an online sales operation. As an open platform backed by a strong community, Drupal also gave Talamas the long-term sustainability it needed to move off an unsupported legacy setup.
