Organizations Involved

Greece has a large number of transport bridges built between the 1950s and 1980s. Many of these assets require systematic monitoring to support timely maintenance decisions and reduce operational risk.

Smart Bridges was designed as a unified digital environment for collecting, managing, and acting on infrastructure intelligence from a nationwide network of sensors installed on strategic road and railway bridges.

Drupal provides the core operational layer of the platform. It manages bridge and asset information, users, groups, permissions, reports, documents, notifications, alarms, and workflows. Drupal was used not simply as a content management system, but as an application framework that ensures consistent data governance and permission-aware access across the platform.

The decoupled Vue.js frontend consumes Drupal-managed data through APIs to provide interactive dashboards, engineering reports, geospatial mapping, filtering tools, and personalised user workspaces.

Why Drupal was chosen

Drupal was chosen because it provides a flexible and secure framework for modelling complex business entities, applying detailed permissions, orchestrating workflows, and integrating with external systems.

For Smart Bridges, Drupal acts as the trusted operational layer between the monitoring ecosystem and the people who need to act on its information. It transforms technical events into structured, permission-aware workflows, where users can view alarms, manage reports, track notification status, filter information, and work from personalised dashboards.

This demonstrates how Drupal can support high-impact operational platforms beyond traditional websites, including Internet of Things, digital twin, and infrastructure-intelligence use cases.
