FUF // Frank und Freunde, a Drupal agency in Stuttgart, handled the complete technical implementation: further development of the online corporate design, programming, content migration, integrations and hosting.
The Robert Bosch Stiftung is one of the large corporate foundations in Europe, working in health, science, society, education and international understanding. In 2017 it revised its corporate design for print and online, with the website as the central hub of its external communication. FUF took over the complete technical implementation of the new site on Drupal 8, which went live in January 2018. The legal notice credited FUF for development and hosting until mid-2026; in that period the site moved on to Drupal 9, 10 and 11. The site has since been relaunched by other agencies.
About the project
Goals. FUF's task was to develop the new online corporate design further, adapt it to existing and new elements and content, and find technical solutions for design elements that had been conceived in advance. FUF programmed the complete responsive website and set up its technical infrastructure, with custom extensions built on Drupal and Symfony.
One responsive site. The previous site had two versions, one for desktop and one for mobile devices. The relaunch replaced them with a single responsive design based on Bootstrap. The design relied on strong colors, moving images and prominent visuals.
Editing with paragraphs. Pages were assembled from content types and paragraphs. A paragraph could be simple text, a quote, an image or an interactive map; archived pages also show types for a main slider, video, publication lists, news teasers and contact persons. Editors reordered paragraphs by drag and drop and chose the color for almost every content element. Content could be tagged with metadata, so it appeared automatically in other places on the site. Logged-in editors could jump from the front end straight into editing a single element.
Two languages. The site ran in German and English. An English version of a German page could be created with one click and already contained all paragraphs of the original, so only the texts had to be translated. Paragraphs without a translation could be hidden in the English version with one click. An XML interface let translation agencies deliver localized content.
Migration and integration. The technical base of the previous site was replaced completely. FUF migrated existing content, integrated external content and built a social media integration to connect content and make it more visible.
Outcome. The site launched in January 2018 after five months of implementation. FUF's report from March 2018 cites consistently positive feedback from visitors and editors. Archived pages show the custom theme from 2018 still in use in June 2026, by then on Drupal 11.
Why Drupal was chosen
Staff at the foundation already had positive experience with Drupal, so the choice fell on Drupal 8, the current version at the time. Drupal could also be adapted flexibly to the design and functional requirements, with editing based on content types and paragraphs.

Paragraphs provided the building blocks for the editorial concept, and Entity Reference Revisions stores them as revisioned field items. Bootstrap Paragraphs added ready-made paragraph types such as Simple and Image and a background color per paragraph; its color classes appear on the archived pages. The Bootstrap base theme matched the Bootstrap grid of the responsive design; the custom theme overrode its templates.
