Visit the siteWydawnictwo WAM is one of Poland's oldest Catholic publishing houses, founded in Krakow in 1872. The organization publishes around 150 titles each year, including books, ebooks, and audiobooks across religious, academic, and popular categories. An in-house IT team built the foundations of wydawnictwowam.pl on Drupal Commerce, then extended development with external Drupal specialists to grow checkout features, shipping integrations, mobile sales, and editorial SEO workflows on a high-volume online bookstore.
About the project
Wydawnictwo WAM operates wydawnictwowam.pl, a large Drupal Commerce bookstore selling print books, ebooks, audiobooks, bundles, and calendars. Development extended an existing Commerce installation with checkout capabilities, carrier and marketing integrations, a mobile-first storefront, release automation, and SEO improvements.
The client
Wydawnictwo WAM is a Krakow-based Catholic publisher founded in 1872. The catalog spans prayer books, catechisms, academic titles, biographies, young adult fiction, cookbooks, and periodicals, with roughly 150 new releases each year. The publisher maintains its own IT department and treats Drupal Commerce as the long-term foundation for direct sales.
Challenge
The platform needed to:
- Extend checkout with gift orders, recipient addresses, and optional gift packaging.
- Connect shipping to Poczta Polska collection points for convenient pickup.
- Sync customer and product category data to Freshmail for segmented newsletters.
- Recover mobile conversion on a storefront originally built for desktop shoppers.
- Introduce Git versioning, staging, and automated deployment for predictable releases.
- Improve search visibility, page speed, and editor workflows at catalog scale.
Solutions
Gift orders and checkout extensions
Custom Commerce modules let shoppers send purchases as gifts with a separate delivery address and optional decorative packaging, staying inside the standard cart and payment pipeline.
Poczta Polska pickup integration
Drupal Commerce connects to the Poczta Polska API so shoppers select a nearby collection point during checkout and order data passes to Poland's postal network.
Freshmail marketing integration
A custom integration sends subscriber data and purchased product categories to Freshmail, enabling newsletters and new-title announcements targeted by interest area.
Mobile storefront and automated testing
A mobile-first layout covers product pages, search, navigation, and the purchase path from cart through delivery selection. CSS moved to SASS, and Codeception tests guard the desktop layout while mobile changes ship.
DevOps workflow
Git replaced ad hoc server file management. A staging copy, automated tests, and a deployment pipeline push approved changes to production. On-site training covered Git branches, git-flow, and pull requests.
SEO and editor tooling
Google Search Console, XML sitemaps, improved headings, and structured price and availability data expanded organic reach. Editor checks warn when meta descriptions exceed recommended length, and image optimization reduced load times.
Result
After the mobile and SEO rollout, mobile purchases rose 200% year over year, desktop sales grew 50%, and search traffic increased 50%. New users grew 84%, bounce rates dropped, and page load times improved. Gift delivery, postal pickup, and Freshmail segmentation remain in daily use.
Examples of implemented features:
- Gift orders with recipient address and optional gift packaging.
- Poczta Polska collection point selection at checkout.
- Freshmail sync with product category data for email campaigns.
- Mobile-first product, search, and checkout layouts with SASS theming.
- Codeception tests protecting desktop and mobile purchase flows.
- Git staging, automated testing, and production deployment pipeline.
- Google Search Console, XML sitemap, and rich product snippets in search results.
Why Drupal was chosen
The WAM bookstore already ran on Drupal Commerce with product catalogs, cart workflows, and editorial content in one platform. Rebuilding on a separate e-commerce SaaS would have discarded custom checkout logic, shipping rules, and marketing integrations tied to the publishing catalog.
Drupal's entity model and Commerce ecosystem made it practical to add gift delivery, carrier API connections, and newsletter segmentation without forking the purchase flow. Responsive theming, automated testing, and Git-based deployment extended the same codebase while the in-house team kept ownership. Staying on Drupal let the publisher scale mobile sales and search visibility on the platform it already operated.
