Project Background: Visible Machines is an independent, non-profit AI Research and Social Awareness Center based in Athens, Greece. Acting as a hub for interdisciplinary research and social engagement, the organization needed a digital presence that reflected its forward-thinking mission regarding the development and use of Artificial Intelligence.

Participating Companies: The project was developed by Web-Thread, a Thessaloniki-based web development agency specializing in custom, pixel-perfect Drupal architectures. Since 2012, Web-Thread has successfully deployed over 150 custom websites. For this specific project, the distinct visual identity and non-traditional layout were designed by Vanessa Ferle, while Web-Thread served as the technical partner responsible for bringing that vision to life through robust code and Drupal integration.

About the project

Goals and Requirements: The primary goal of this project was to establish a highly distinctive, fast, and lightweight digital presence for Visible Machines, while giving their internal team total control over their content. Rather than relying on pre-built templates, the requirement was to build a custom UI/UX from scratch.

What Makes This Project Special: The standout feature of this project is its unconventional UI. Designed by Vanessa Ferle, the artistic elements are positioned in highly unusual ways, completely departing from standard web grid layouts. Translating this unique artistic vision into lightweight, responsive code required complex geometry and mathematical calculations. The technical challenge was achieving pixel-perfect alignment for these off-grid elements while ensuring the layout adapted flawlessly across all device screens and aspect ratios.

Project Management & Milestones: Our team adopted an agile approach, working closely with the designer to ensure technical feasibility without compromising the artistic vision. Major milestones included:

  • Initial architectural planning and content structuring within Drupal.
  • Mathematical mapping of the non-standard UI elements.
  • Translating the design into a fully responsive, pixel-perfect front-end.
  • A 1-month development sprint culminating in a successful launch.

Outcomes and Business Problems Solved: We successfully delivered a fast, efficient, and visually stunning website that operates exactly as designed on every screen. By building a custom solution on top of Drupal rather than just installing it, we solved the client's core business problem: dependency. The Visible Machines team now has a powerful, secure backend where they can independently manage all their updates and research publications without needing to contact a developer for every minor change. The resulting site is an exceptional, trust-inspiring platform that perfectly matches the innovative nature of their AI research.

Why Drupal was chosen

When evaluating the technical foundation for Visible Machines, we briefly considered simpler, more ubiquitous platforms like WordPress. However, we ultimately chose Drupal because we needed an "engine" capable of delivering enterprise-grade power, rather than just a basic blogging tool. Drupal met the project’s specific needs in three critical ways:

  • Content Flexibility: Visible Machines is an interdisciplinary research hub, meaning their data goes far beyond standard "pages" and "posts." Drupal’s architecture allowed us to precisely structure, categorize, and interconnect complex content types (such as research papers, events, and organizational initiatives).
  • Absolute Scalability: While the organization is launching with a specific set of requirements, their role as an AI research center means they need a platform that can grow exponentially. Drupal guarantees that whether the site eventually needs to support tens of thousands of concurrent users or house massive databases of research, the CMS will scale without breaking a sweat.
  • Enterprise-Grade Security: As an organization dealing with the social implications of AI, data integrity and security are paramount. Drupal’s reputation as the most secure open-source CMS provided the peace of mind required for this non-profit hub.
