About the project
VanePump is a certified Parker Hannifin distributor serving engineers across EMEA with 250,000+ technical products. Their platform handles high-traffic B2B operations with advanced search capabilities powered by Apache Solr. The Drupal 7 site was approaching end-of-life and needed to be migrated to a modern, supported platform without disrupting business operations.
Goals and Requirements:
The migration needed to preserve the entire 250,000-product catalog with full data accuracy, maintain SEO rankings that drive organic B2B traffic, rebuild the Solr-powered search infrastructure on Drupal 10, and implement high-performance hosting capable of handling both legitimate user traffic and increasingly aggressive AI spider traffic. The project was completed in 5 months with a team of 2 developers.
Migration API for 250K Products:
CodeLift leveraged Drupal core's Migration API to handle the 250,000-product catalog efficiently. A reduced developer database was created for faster iteration during development, ensuring all field structures were preserved while enabling rapid development cycles. The migration achieved 100% data accuracy across every product record.
AI-Powered Search Rebuild:
Artificial intelligence was used to rewrite custom search code from Drupal 7 to Drupal 10. The Solr Search API integration was manually rebuilt to ensure optimal performance for B2B catalog searches, enabling engineers to quickly find the exact hydraulic components they need across the massive product catalog.
High-Performance Infrastructure:
Enterprise-grade hosting was implemented with Memcache for object caching, Apache Solr for search, and Cloudflare CDN for edge delivery. The infrastructure was specifically optimized to handle aggressive AI spider traffic while maintaining sub-200ms average page load times -- critical for a B2B platform where engineers expect instant access to technical specifications.
SEO Preservation Strategy:
Automated testing for URLs, redirects, and HTML SEO attributes ensured zero loss in search rankings. Every product page maintained its organic traffic value through the migration. This was verified through comprehensive automated checks across the entire 250,000-page catalog.
Phased Migration Approach:
The Drupal 7 system was kept running as a fallback during the initial weeks post-launch. Multiple rollback points allowed quick reversion when performance tuning was needed, ensuring business continuity throughout the transition. This phased approach gave the team confidence to fine-tune the new platform under real production load.
Enterprise Testing Protocol:
Comprehensive QA included automated screenshot comparisons, form validation, and search functionality testing across the entire 250,000-product catalog. This systematic testing approach ensured visual consistency and functional correctness at enterprise scale.
Migration by the Numbers:
- ~200ms average page load time
- 250,000 products migrated with 100% accuracy
- 5-month project timeline with 2 developers
- 0 SEO rankings lost
- 100% AI spider traffic handled without degradation
The Solution:
VanePump's platform was rebuilt on Drupal 10+ with zero downtime, delivering approximately 200ms page loads with enterprise-grade performance. The migration preserved all 250,000 products with complete data accuracy while maintaining hard-earned SEO rankings. High-performance hosting with Memcache, Solr, and Cloudflare ensures the platform handles intense AI spider traffic without breaking a sweat.
