Organizations Involved

As Nationwide IT Services (NIS) grew from a small business into a large federal contractor, its website needed to evolve beyond basic functionality. The organization required a secure, scalable, and mission-ready platform capable of supporting enterprise content management, stakeholder engagement, and advanced digital capabilities. As a Drupal-focused organization with an in-house team of Drupal developers, NIS migrated from Wix to Drupal to gain greater control, flexibility, and long-term support for emerging technologies such as chatbots and other AI-enabled tools.

About the project

Goals:

This effort was undertaken to establish a modern, enterprise-level digital platform capable of supporting long-term scalability, stability, and continued growth as organizational needs evolved. A key objective was to deliver an industry-competitive website that could accommodate future enhancements, emerging technologies, and increasing user demand without sacrificing performance or security.

In addition, the platform was designed to serve as a hands-on training environment for interns and emerging technical staff, providing opportunities to develop skills in modern web technologies, agile development practices, and secure platform operations. Together, these goals ensured that the solution would not only meet current mission requirements but also support workforce development and long-term sustainability.

Requirements:

The effort focused on delivering a secure, scalable, and enterprise-grade website using an agile development approach.

Key requirements included strengthening security controls, enabling future enhancements such as artificial intelligence driven capabilities, and delivering a polished, industry standard user experience aligned with the expectations of an enterprise federal contractor.

Specific security requirements included implementing CAPTCHA protections on public facing forms such as the Contact Us page and integrating Okta authentication for user logins. All security enhancements were required to be implemented without service disruption, ensuring continuous availability throughout deployment.

Outcome:

As a result of the migration, NIS achieved a highly customizable and scalable enterprise website capable of supporting the integration of artificial intelligence tools and chatbots, enhanced user engagement features, and improved methods for gathering and analyzing user feedback. The modernized platform also introduced a dedicated development and testing environment that strengthened team knowledge, accelerated hands-on learning, and improved overall development practices.

The test environment enables the NIS team to validate client solutions in a controlled setting prior to deployment or migration. This approach reduced implementation risk, improved solution quality, and shortened development and validation cycles by streamlining testing workflows, directly supporting client projects, future enhancements, and evolving mission needs.

Why Drupal was chosen

Drupal was chosen because it provides a secure, scalable, and highly customizable open-source content management platform that aligns with enterprise and federal standards. Its open-source extensibility, mature module ecosystem, and transparent community governance enable long-term flexibility and innovation, while the Drupal security release process supports strong risk management and ongoing compliance.

As a Drupal-focused organization with an in-house team of Drupal developers, NIS selected Drupal to gain greater control over site functionality, support advanced capabilities such as AI tools and chatbots, enable future enhancements, and leverage Drupal’s broad federal adoption footprint to maintain a robust development environment that strengthens internal expertise and directly supports client projects.
