Amazon module Feeds integration made possible by Randy Fay and development was sponsored by Bobastream, LLC.

MusicGearGeeks.com allows musicians to review, organize and share their music gear by adding them to their online rigg.

About the project

Music gear site leverages Drupal tech to forge new ecommerce module and social network framework.

Its been three years in the making with help of Randy Fay (http://drupal.org/user/30906). Randy implemented feeds compatibility for the Amazon module where development was sponsored by Bobastream, LLC and contributed back to the community.

During my early Drupal years, I've envisioned a site that would allow musicians to share and organize their music gear. Sounds kinda "already-been-done-ish" I know. I wanted a site that connected musicians to each other through the music gear that they own. The most Drupalian way to implement this each piece of gear as a node and allow registered users to reference them as items they've already own or want to purchase. So how do I get hundreds and thousands of music gear onto the site. I could follow the yelp model and open it up to users to add each item, but I did not have resources to properly screen each item for duplicate posts nor did I have the patience to wait for the content to grow organically. Fortunately, with Amazon's diverse collection and convenient record of all variety of music gear, all I had to do was import Amazon music gear products onto the site. And this was made possible with the feeds integration of the Amazon module where I was able to feed in a csv file of ASINs (unique Amazon product IDs) and leverage the Amazon product API the was baked in the Amazon module to generate nodes for each Amazon product that was fed into the site.

The next step was to build a social framework around the imported products that allows users to add them to their profile, review them and submit demo's for any particular product on the site.

So how do we plan keep the lights on. The Amazon module conveniently generates a referral link for each product and allows an associated Amazon Associate ID to be configured. Therefore, any purchases on Amazon as a result of the clicking on the referral link result in a modest affiliated commission.

Please log on and give feedback and if you are a music gear fan, join and take the site for a test drive.

Why Drupal was chosen

It allowed for a flexible yet powerful suite of function and modules that was required to implement our unique approach to affiliate advertising and social networking within the music gear industry.
