About the project

Goal

Capture most content from previous (Drupal 6) site, build new UI and backend with D7, add document searching capability, multimedia library, and interactive map. The existing site did not make efficient use of taxonomy, which caused the client some frustration. The client gave us 6 months for the conversion.

Approach

Using Drupal 7 we built a brand-new site, including a member listing, member map, searchable publications archives (including PDF, Word, and PowerPoint keyword indexing), events (including iCal support), and subtle use of jQuery. The content has been structured to allow for flexible growth over time, using custom content types and tagging.

Old nodes were imported over using Feeds, and most everything else was left alone. We did not need to worry about porting custom modules, for example. We worked closely with the client to set up editing workflows that made sense for their needs, and involved them in the editing process months before launch, to start training early. The site was also set up with extensive use of taxonomy so that nodes can be displayed in many different ways using Views, minimizing duplication of effort.

Outcome

After wireframing and design we built the new D7 site on Ubuntu + LAMP stack. It was launched with two months to spare. The new site has facilitated more efficient content management for AFI Global and allowed them to focus on additional feature enhancements that had been held back previously.

Why Drupal was chosen

Client was already using Drupal (6) on their site, but wanted to moved to 7.

Technical Specifications

Why these modules/theme/distribution were chosen

Views was indispensable for setting up the member and partner listings, as well as the digital library, news, policy areas, and many other areas of the site.

The library is searchable and searches files (PDFs and PPTs) as well, using Tika.

The media library uses JW Player for video, and QuickTabs is used for condensing content in sensible ways. Nice Menus and Prev/Next aid in navigation.
