Community contributions
- Followed Drupal community–recommended migration practices and documentation
- Used only actively maintained contributed modules
- Adhered to Drupal coding standards and upgrade paths
- Reduced reliance on custom code where contributed solutions were available
The project reflects Drupal’s strengths as a sustainable open-source CMS for long-term digital platforms and demonstrates how structured migrations can extend the life of legacy Drupal sites while aligning with community standards.
Travel Nation’s website was running on Drupal 7, which was approaching End of Life on January 5, 2025. To avoid security risks, unsupported modules, and maintenance challenges, the organization required a structured upgrade to a supported Drupal version. The migration needed to retain existing content, preserve search engine visibility, and improve performance without disrupting ongoing business operations.
About the project
Goals
- Migrate the website from Drupal 7 to Drupal 9 before End of Life
- Preserve existing content, URLs, and SEO rankings

- Reduce technical debt caused by deprecated modules
Requirements
- Audit and map all Drupal 7 content types, fields, and taxonomies
- Identify supported replacements for deprecated or unsupported modules
- Execute migration in phases to reduce risk
- Validate content accuracy, SEO integrity, and performance post-migration
Outcome
- Successful migration to Drupal 9 with all critical content and features retained
- Improved page load performance and system stability
- Streamlined content structure and removal of redundant data
- Continued SEO performance with preserved URLs and metadata
- A future-ready platform aligned with Drupal’s supported release cycle
Why Drupal was chosen
Drupal was retained as the platform of choice because of:
- Its proven stability for content-heavy, enterprise-scale websites
- Strong security practices and long-term support model
- Flexibility in handling structured content such as destinations, travel packages, blogs, and reviews
- A mature ecosystem of contributed modules and an active open-source community
- Familiarity for the client’s editorial and administrative teams
Upgrading to Drupal 9 ensured continued compatibility with modern PHP versions, improved performance, and access to future Drupal core enhancements.
