Rotary is an international service organization whose stated purpose is to bring together business and professional leaders in order to provide humanitarian services, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

About the project

With over 34,000 clubs and 1.2 million members worldwide, Rotary has taken on some of the world's toughest challenges and helped a wide range of international and service organizations get started. Despite its tremendous impact, its collective contributions were not fully understood by the broader public. Furthermore, advances in technology and a changing landscape - including an influx of micro-causes - made the task of recruiting and retaining members and appealing to strategic partners even more challenging. NorthPoint Digital was tasked with evaluating Rotary's digital presence - a critical set of touchpoints that drive understanding, create relevance and inspire engagement with the 1.2 million members as well as appeal to millions more.

Why Drupal was chosen

Drupal was chosen for its flexibility and extensibility. Rotary had been using SharePoint as a CMS, and there was a sincere desire within the organization to use the best technology solutions available end-to-end rather than being limited their existing technologies.

Why these modules/theme/distribution were chosen

Workbench Moderation - Rotary wanted a truly bespoke content workflow, involving several teams that authored, edited, and translated content. The complexity of their workflow made Workbench Moderation the obvious choice as it included the most extensible state workflow and customization-friendly interface through Views.

i18n - With translation management being such an important part of delivering content to a truly global audience, it was essential that Rotary base their site on a road tested translation solution. The i18n suite of modules fit all the criteria and was lock-solid stable during even the most complex translation workflows and content delivery situations.

Domain Access - There was a strong desire to make the public site separate from the networking-focused My Rotary section of the site. However, the administrative interface and user data needed to be shared between the two sites, which made a multisite solution somewhat less attractive. Domain Access allowed the two sites to be hosted from the same database and made the two sites feel less separate in terms of administrative management.

ZURB Foundation - Everyone was sold on using Foundation as the basis for the Rotary site and the ZURB implementation proved to be a good starting point. It allowed the themers to easily implement all the various breakpoints that were mocked up during the design phase of the project, and also gave the themers a leg up in developing other front-end behaviors. The finished site speaks for itself in its responsiveness to whatever device is viewing it.

Browscap - We needed a proven, central location for managing platform detection, and Browscap did the trick.

Conditional Fields - Dynamic forms allow for forms that appear less overwhelming at first and give users a feeling that the system is responding to their needs. The module gave us a quick way to set these up that was easy to troubleshoot and deploy.

Features - It's nearly impossible to work on a Drupal project without features these days, as it allows configurations to be deployed separately from content.

netFORUM xWeb Interface - This module got us about half way towards full integration with their CRM, and it was an immense help in providing a basic framework for developing exactly what we were looking for.
